Surya Govender is a writer, textile and paper artist living on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She works with words, thread, paint and collage techniques to tell stories that she hopes will amuse, surprise, and challenge.
Surya loves to explore the aspects of our lives that go unnoticed, the mundane experiences that quietly shape us and the world in which we live. Her creative process is a curation, of sorts - she follows the images and ideas that are in front of her, and is always surprised by what happens. Accidental juxtapositions are often more effective than deliberate ones. She does her best to follow the accidents.
